bACKGROUND

The Diamond P Ranch in West Yellowstone, Montana was an original homestead on the Nez Perce trail traveled by Chief Joseph as he lead his people to new territory and safety. The Portmann family purchased the land in 1954, operating a cattle ranch and horse guided tour business with the intention to preserve this land for generations to come.

THE PROJECT

At the entrance to Yellowstone National Park, this 200 acre ranch is a precious part of our nations history and is home to the wildlife that move in and out of Yellowstone Park. Recently, this ranch and surrounding open space has been at threat to growing development and land acquisition by large corporations that want to turn this area into massive RV campsites and sewage discharge pasture to accommodate more travelers to Yellowstone. In an effort to combat this harmful development, Oxbow was hired to evaluate these threats to the ranch and create a master conservation plan which includes stream restoration, expansion of biodiverse wildlife and fish habitat, and ranch succession planning to allow the family to protect open spaces and wildlife habitat while preserving the legacy of the ranches history.

THE RESULT

This project is currently in master planning stages.
